The April uprising in 1876 was quelled by irregular Ottoman troops in a way that became known as the Batak massacre. Population: 2,722 inhabitants (as of 15.12.2022). It was estimated that 5000 out of a population of 7000 had perished at Batak in few days. Batak massacre was an event that had substantial reverberation throughout Europe at that time. In March 2011, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church canonized the victims of the Batak massacre.
In modern time, Batak is a town that builds upon tourism and wood industry.
